Units of Inquiry

In line with the IB PYP framework, St Columba's students in Years 1-6 undertake six units of inquiry each year, whilst Prep students engage in four units of inquiry.
Six transdisciplinary themes that have global significance and explore human commonalities provide the structure for units of inquiry that are significant, engaging, relevant, and challenging. These transdisciplinary themes are:
  • Who We Are
  • Where We Are in Place and Time
  • How We Express Ourselves
  • How We Organise Ourselves
  • Sharing the Planet
  • How the World Works
The units of inquiry at St Columba's allow students to investigate rich concepts within the Victorian Curriculum disciplines of Science, The Humanities, Personal, Social and Physical Health, the Arts and Digital Technologies.
The experiences that support student's understanding within units of inquiry are designed around engaging, stimulating and stretching student thinking. We take into consideration STEM disciplines, design thinking processes and utilise technologies as tools for learning. Learner agency is emphasised and there is a focus on helping students to develop skills that will help them as life-long learners.
